Dear peony lover, you have bought peonies or better yet, been given peonies. You are looking at her buds that will start showing their beauty of the flower at any moment. You have grabbed a vase, put water in it and put them on the table. You wonder: is it now waiting or can I do more to get everything out of the flower? Therefore, especially for you:
Our tips for beautiful peony blooms in the vase:
First of all, did you not buy peonies too raw? It is common for some growers to cut too raw, bullet-hard buds. As a result, nothing will happen at your home in the vase.
- Peony buds may have a sticky sugar coating. Because of this, they sometimes have trouble flowering because the petals are stuck. Against this, you can hold the bud under lukewarm water for a while. Note: do this with the flower down so the water does not flow into the petals.
- Remove the lower leaves so that no leaves can get into the water. This actually causes mold to grow.
- Cut the stem 2 cm diagonally with a clean, sharp knife (do not cut), for good water absorption.
- Use a clean vase to avoid giving bacteria a chance. You can easily clean the vase with e.g. a drop of chlorine.
- Use lukewarm water. Change the water after a few days and check the water level regularly because they are thirsty (!) You can also cut a piece of the stem again for good water absorption.
- Use flower food. Don't have that? Then you can also add a scoop of sugar.
- Don't put too many flowers in 1 vase. When you see the bud you wouldn't tell, but a peony generally grows 15 to 20 inches. So give her room to grow. If you don't? Then chances are they will have trouble blooming.
- Make sure the room is not too warm and place them in a bright spot. Never in full sun nor in a draft. Also not near fruit, it emits ethylene which causes the flower to age faster.
After this, the most important tip is to enjoy every moment of the peony's bloom. Because unfortunately, the peony's vase life is short but powerful compared to other flowers. But it is more than worth it!
